Emmanuel Goldstein is one of the mysterious characters in the book. In the book one of chapter one says, “Emmanuel Goldstein was the renegade and backslider who once, long ago, had been one of the leading figures of the Party, almost on a level with Big Brother himself, and then had engaged in counter-revolutionary activities, had been condemned to death, and had mysteriously escaped and disappeared.” So I believe he was anti – Party organization and then captured by the Party but he had escaped and hid somewhere that they are not able to find. This is the one of reason why they don't know whether he exists or not. Winston asked O’Brien whether the Brotherhood exists or not. But O’Brien says, “That, Winston, you will never know. If we choose to set you free when we have finished with you, and if you live to be ninety years old, still you will never learn whether the answer to that question is Yes or No. As long as you live it will be an unsolved riddle in your mind.” So O’Brien did not tell Winston if he exists or not but it seems more like he exists as effect on Winston.
