In the book one of chapter one describes Emmanuel Goldstein’s looks and how people think of him. The book says, “It was a lean Jewish face, with a great fuzzy aureole of white hair and a small goatee beard - a clever face, and yet somehow inherently despicable, with a kind of senile silliness in the long thin nose, near the end of which a pair of spectacles was perched. It resembled the face of a sheep, and the voice, too, had a sheep-like quality.” This is an image of Emmanuel Goldstein is shown as the primal traitor on the telescreen. This is a daily program beginning at 11:00 AM, which is called the Two Minutes Hate, and he is always the subject of it. This is for the Party members of the society of Oceania and they must watch it and express their hatred. This is a form of brainwashing to Party members. The book also shows, “There were hisses here and there among the audience. The little sandy – haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust.” So people are watching this on a daily basis and expressing their hatred, anger, and fear towards to Emmanuel Goldstein.
